On view 8/7/2014 through 8/29/2014
1AM Gallery is pleased to present, “Paradise Lost”, opening on August 7th, 6:30 – 9:30 PM. The exhibit showcases mixed media works on canvas by Kamea Hadar and Defer KS2. Expect to see complex, multi-layered typographic works along with hyper-realistic oil paintings featuring images of Hawaiian flowers set ablaze.
During POW! WOW! Hawaii 2014, the two artists collaborated on a mural that marked the start of a year-long series of collaborative walls, gallery shows, and other creative projects between the two artists entitled “Paradise Lost”. The 1AM Gallery show is part of the second installment of this series along with two large-scale murals here in San Francisco. “Paradise Lost” refers to English poet John Milton’s epic poem by the same title. Milton’s twelve-book poem traces the Biblical story of Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve and their exile from Paradise, which parallels the Fall of Man. Kamea and Defer mirror this age-old story to their respective experiences in Hawaii, a paradise in itself. Their work reflects on how the modern world of urbanization has inevitably transformed the idyllic oasis into a new thriving cultural hub.
